When you just can’t find the perfect maxi dress, make it yourself.

And that’s what I did. I wanted a maxi dress that was the perfect length (difficult when you’re 5’10). Made from a beautiful stretch jersey. A strong color, halter neckline & something that wasn’t ordinary. I looked everywhere…online & retail stores, high-end & low-end. Nothing!

So, I took matters in to my own hands. I went to world-renowned Mood Fabrics, NYC. I mean, if it’s good enough for Project Runway contestants, it should be good enough for me. Plus, I get to feel like I’m on the show…. for a few minutes.

I made this dress for under $40.00. That includes 3 yards of fabric, 1 yard of half inch elastic and 1 spool of thread.

Several weeks back, I went out to Brooklyn to have brunch with a good friend, who also happens to be a part-time photographer. Prior to brunch, she suggested we pop in the Sculpture Park at Pratt Institute. How convenient, the Park was across the street from where we were to dine.

Such a nice campus, well worth getting up at 9am. While there, my friend captured these photos.

Is it possible, putting on an article of clothing that was made across the pond, could actually make me feel like a brit? I don’t know Boden UK, lets give it a try.

One day out of nowhere, in my mailbox was a catalog I had never seen before. Boden? The cover had a model wearing a beautiful brightly colored orange & navy linen dress. I love color so I was immediately intrigued. As I stood there flipping through the pages, it reminded of Jcrew but with color overload, (in a good way).

Up to my apt I go, open up my notebook, go to the Boden US site and I was in love. Hooked at first site, I purchased several pieces. Even more exciting, Boden carries tall, or as they refer to it….long. Garments in long have an additional 3 inches of length. Perfect for us tall girls.

Boden UK was founded by Johnnie Boden in 1991. The website boden.co.uk was launched in April 1999. In 2002, the company expanded to America, launching bodenusa.com. Boden’s first shop opened in 2004 in Hanger Lane, London and is still there to date.

I purchased this piece in early spring and now it’s time to pull it out of the closet.
