So, BAE’s (Ballet Academy East, NYC) artistic director hosted a “casual brunch” at her beautiful home in Connecticut back in May. The brunch was for a small group of the current Young Dancers Division Instructors & Pre-Proffessional Division Alumni Instructors. Her way of saying thank you for your dedication.

(Back-drop) Two years ago, I was a part-time student instructor. After working 7:30am-5:30pm, I would rush off to BAE to work with students auditioning for, The Juilliard School – Dance Division. So you can imagine just how flattered I was to have received my first invite to the gathering.

I’ve heard nothing but great things about the brunch. Though the invite stated “casual”, I reached out to a fellow instructor who was in attendance three years ago. She told me some wear dresses, others wear jeans and several people will be in leggings, a tank and a waterfall cardigan (typical attire of the more mature instructors).

Me, I went with an embroidered floral skirt by the folks that do it best. Sachin & Babi have some of the most intricate patterns & richest color palettes there are. I must say, their line at Anthropologie doesn’t disappoint, coming in at an average price point of $250. As you may know….that’s a bargain.

I have to be honest, I was shocked to see almost all of the guest in such dark colors. Deep down on the inside, I was delighted to be that breathe of fresh air in the room. (Tooting my own horn).

Oh yes, they’re back and in a major way. Culottes are here and designers have given us endless choices. Many different fabrics (my favorite being a summer crepe), various lengths, flat front, accordion pleated and cuffed. I could go on and on but I digress.

Have you ever been looking through old photos of your grandmother from when she was young and come across her dressed in an extremely wide leg trouser? At first you may have thought it was a cocktail length skirt but you’d be wrong. Your grandmother rocked today’s trend way before you were even born.

I remember as a teen, looking at pictures of my mother when she was a child. One in particular was a photo of her during an equestrian lesson. My grandfather, (a professional photographer) captured my grandmother standing and leaning on the fence while watching my mother in the outdoor arena. What was she wearing….culottes. Not only did I discuss my mom’s riding ability back then but my grandmother and I also discussed her choice in fashion.

She told me that in her time, culottes were the modern-day women’s go to piece of clothing if they were to do any activity, wherein modesty was needed. It was the answer to riding a bike, horse-backing riding and/or roller skating just to name a few.

Women were so refined back then. My how things have changed.

As I mentioned earlier, the culottes come in several lengths and as you can see, I went with the traditional mid-calf length.

I’M BACK PEOPLE! Yes yes yes, I’ve been missing in action for almost two weeks now. Where have I been? I was held captive by my apartment and submerged in way too many boxes. I will discuss that more next week and hopefully have a few pictures of the new residence for you. Anyway…

Is it me or has mother nature been teasing us this spring season? She’s been so darn fickle. Here in NYC, one day it’s 70 degrees and the next it’s 45 degrees, drizzling, gloomy and down right chilly. That being said, how does one handle this erratic weather in terms of personal style? You make certain to keep your fall layering pieces within reach.

One of my favorite layering pieces, regardless of the season is my military jacket.

I believe it was Marc Jacobs who was quoted during the S/S 2015 runway show as saying, “military clothes are part of the fashion vernacular these days”. The man speaks the truth.

Take a moment, allow your thoughts to travel back in fashion history. Who and/or what gave this look legs? Such a dizzying evolution don’t you think. From an institutional emblem to a jacket that was worn by those clashing with the institution. Think of John and Yoko in their matching military surplus. And lets not forget Jane Fonda, she donned the utilitarian topper for antiwar rallies. Do you think these three icons knew their message would trickle down to the fashion world?
